Strikes and Stalemates: Ukraine Negotiations Overshadowed by Renewed Violence
Ukraine has strongly condemned a new wave of overnight Russian strikes that killed one civilian and injured at least 23 others, as delicate negotiations involving Kyiv, Moscow, and Washington were preparing to resume.
Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described the assault as brutal and cynical, saying it was deliberately ordered by President Vladimir Putin and damaged not only Ukrainian lives, but also the prospects for meaningful peace talks.
As bombs fell, delegations from Ukraine, Russia, and the United States were meeting in Abu Dhabi for their first trilateral discussions since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
A source familiar with the talks said limited progress had been achieved so far, but the central dispute over territory remains unresolved and continues to block any comprehensive agreement.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that one person died and four were injured in the capital, with three victims hospitalised and critical infrastructure damaged during the strikes.
The attacks left around 6,000 buildings in Kyiv without heating, an especially severe blow as temperatures dropped to nearly minus twelve degrees Celsius across parts of Ukraine.
In Kharkiv, Mayor Ihor Terekhov said 19 people were wounded during sustained early-morning strikes, which damaged a maternity hospital and a hostel housing displaced civilians.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said the main target of the Russian attacks was Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, echoing similar strikes that disrupted Kyiv’s power supply just a week earlier.
Meanwhile, Zelensky reiterated that land remains the core unresolved issue, as Russia occupies about 20 percent of Ukraine and demands territorial concessions Kyiv has firmly rejected.
