Tragic Ambush Claims Lives of Mexico City Mayor’s Inner Circle

A violent attack in Mexico City has left two close aides of Mayor Clara Brugada dead. The incident occurred on Tuesday in the Moderna neighborhood, a typically quiet area now shaken by the tragedy. The victims, identified as Ximena Guzmán, Brugada’s private secretary, and José Muñoz, an adviser, were reportedly ambushed by gunmen riding a motorcycle in a highly targeted strike.

According to Mayor Brugada, the victims were killed in what she described as a “direct attack.” Both Guzmán and Muñoz were on their way to work when their vehicle was intercepted by armed assailants. The incident happened between Calzada de Tlalpan and Napoleón Street, an area not usually associated with such high-profile attacks, prompting concern among city residents.

Surveillance footage from the area is currently being reviewed by law enforcement agencies. Authorities from both Mexico City and the federal government have launched an investigation to determine the motive behind the attack. The sudden and calculated nature of the shooting has raised alarms about the security of public officials in one of the world’s largest cities.

Crime scene footage showed a bullet-ridden vehicle as forensic teams conducted their investigation. The windshield bore several bullet holes, suggesting the officials were caught by surprise. The targeting of government staff in such a brutal fashion adds to growing fears over political violence in Mexico, especially ahead of the country’s upcoming electoral season.

Mayor Brugada expressed deep sorrow over the loss, highlighting the personal and professional impact of their deaths. She described Guzmán as a compassionate and wonderful woman, and called Muñoz one of the most intelligent individuals she had ever worked with. Their passing marks a significant loss to her administration and the broader Morena political movement.

President Claudia Sheinbaum, who previously served as mayor of Mexico City and is closely allied with Brugada, offered her condolences during a Tuesday press conference. She emphasized the dedication of both officials to the Morena party’s cause and promised to pursue justice for the victims. Sheinbaum pledged full cooperation with the investigation and said their loss would not go unanswered.

“These were people we’ve known for a long time, committed to our movement,” Sheinbaum said. Her statement underlined the emotional toll the incident has taken within the upper echelons of government. She noted that further information is still forthcoming as investigators work to piece together the circumstances surrounding the crime.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. Attacks against political figures in Mexico have been on the rise. Data Cívica, a human rights organization, recorded 661 politically motivated attacks last year alone. Many of these incidents have targeted individuals who either held or were campaigning for municipal positions, highlighting a disturbing pattern of escalating violence.

Recent months have been particularly brutal. In May 2024, a mayoral candidate was gunned down in Guerrero during a public campaign event. That killing, captured on video, shocked the nation. Shortly after, the mayor of Cotija in Michoacán state was shot and killed while walking home from a gym session, and similar attacks have continued with alarming frequency.

As the country grapples with this wave of violence, questions are being raised about the protection afforded to public servants. The deaths of Guzmán and Muñoz serve as a grim reminder of the dangers facing those in public office. Authorities now face increasing pressure to restore confidence and ensure the safety of their officials.
