Tragedy on Air: Mexican Influencer Gunned Down During Livestream

Valeria Marquez, a 23-year-old beauty influencer from Zapopan, Mexico, was engaging with her followers during a TikTok livestream when a shocking and fatal event occurred right before their eyes.
During the stream, she received a package and playfully showed off a small stuffed piglet to her audience, her demeanor cheerful and relaxed. Moments later, her life was abruptly cut short.
Marquez was fatally shot in her beauty salon by a man who had entered the premises. Blood pooled on the desk as the livestream continued, capturing the horror in real time.
The Jalisco Attorney General’s office is investigating the crime as a suspected femicide, highlighting the persistent issue of gender-based violence in Mexico, which continues to claim many lives.
Her death is part of a disturbing pattern. Only days earlier, a mayoral candidate in Veracruz was murdered on camera along with three others, sparking outrage across the country.
According to Amnesty International, a quarter of all female homicides in Mexico in 2020 were classified as femicides. These killings were reported in every state, showing the scale of the crisis.
Human rights groups emphasize the lack of effective responses. In 2022, 4,000 women were killed, yet few cases lead to convictions. Officials cite limited investigative capacity as a major obstacle.
