Tensions in South Asia Force Airlines to Reroute Amid Kashmir Crisis

In light of escalating tensions between India and Pakistan following a deadly massacre in Kashmir, several international airlines have suspended flying over Pakistani airspace. This marks yet another travel disruption caused by geopolitical instability.

Air France was among the first to announce a suspension, citing increased regional tensions. The airline stated it would reroute certain flights, which may result in longer travel times for passengers.

Lufthansa, Germany’s national carrier, echoed this sentiment, confirming it was steering clear of Pakistani airspace until further notice. Other airlines, like British Airways and Emirates, have visibly changed their routes via the Arabian Sea.

The trigger for this spike in tensions was the killing of 26 people, mostly tourists, in the Pahalgam region of Indian-administered Kashmir, prompting India to blame Pakistan. Pakistan, in turn, denied involvement.

Diplomatic relations between the nuclear-armed nations have since worsened, leading to airspace closures and mutual military posturing. Pakistan even carried out two missile tests within a three-day period.

India responded with mock security drills nationwide and test strikes by its navy, emphasizing the fragile balance in the region. Both countries have shown increased military readiness since the massacre.

Despite calls for restraint by the UN, U.S., and China, fears are growing that the conflict could escalate into open confrontation. The UN Secretary-General warned that a military resolution is not the answer.
